學、碩、博三個階段分別接受歷史學、國際關係及中東研究等跨領域訓練。現開設課程主要聚焦於近現代世界史與現代中東歷史領域。過去兩百年來，西方大國所建構的國際秩序，仍深刻影響國人對世界的理解。尤其對於非西方地區，長期被視為西方的對立面，並被貼上專制、迷信與不文明等刻板印象。然而，西方人文學界有別於政治菁英與主流媒體，對近現代世界與其歷史的認識已累積豐碩研究成果，其所呈現的國際觀尚未在台灣廣為人知。

　　世界史與全球史正是認識世界、建立國際觀的重要途徑之一。由於地緣政治因素，台灣社會對世界的理解多半仍沿用西方中心論的視角。因此，在教學設計與研究取徑上，旨在突破「以西方為中心」的世界觀。課程雖然會討論文藝復興、地理大發現與宗教改革對歐洲歷史的重要性，但也會指出，這些歷史變革並非完全源於歐洲內部，而與歐洲與其外部世界如美洲、鄂圖曼帝國、印度洋及東南亞之間的互動與衝突密切相關。此外，歷史不單純是過去發生的事件，今日世界的國際局勢仍與過去有千絲萬縷的關係。學習歷史未必帶來名與利，但能使我們以更冷靜與清晰的視角，理解當前世界與過去之間的斷裂與連結。
